Field Trials

The results of the field trials listed below are examples of careful monitoring in a 'before and after' scenario. These trials were carried out by an independent company that specialises in this type of data recording and reporting.

Philippine Seven Corporation

The original trials were carried out in three 7-11 stores in Manila Philippines, on a 'no win - no pay' basis. A typical 7-11 store in Manila usually has either two of three split system air conditioners (nominal 5 tr each), a walk in cooler, and a freezer. The air conditioning systems had hermetic compressors operating on R22, whilst the walk in coolers and the freezers used Copelematic, semi-hermetic compressors operating on R12 and R502 respectively.

Each systems performance was monitored before any changes. Any faults that were found were also rectified, and there were a few. The systems were changed over to ERG 1000, in all compressors, in all three stores and then monitored for a period of three months. The performance analysis clearly showed an increase in performance, averaging 17%.

The Philippine Seven Corporation also studied their power billing which also confirmed the savings.

China Banking Corporation

This trial was on a 100 tr, reciprocating open drive chiller, the unit was in the old head office of the China Banking Corporation in down town Binondo, Manila. The system was poorly serviced, there was a leak on a service valve and the equipment was generally in bad order, at about 28 years old. All the main visible faults were fixed.

The unit was then monitored for a three week period, the old oil was removed and replaced with ERG 1000, and monitoring continued for a further month. We should add that additional gas was added as the system was approximately 10% down on optimum charge/kW drawn.

The end result was a massive 34% increase in output, and from the test data taken, 22% of the increase in output was due to the oil. The other 12% was attributed to the additional refrigerant, as test data was recorded before and after the gas top up.

Glaxo-Welcome, Manila

Two Carlyle air cooled DX systems, nominally rated at 40 tr, in excellent condition given the age - well maintained. The oil was changed in only one unit - but both were monitored. The before and after readings were as follows.

Unit Before kW/out After kW/out Difference (%)
One 114.5 114.5 None
Two 103.7 133.49 +22.31%

A very clear increase in output of over 22%.

Obviously, Glaxo-Manila went on to change all their units.

Eveready, Manila

Very similar to the units at Glaxo, only less well maintained, the performance was so poor on both units, we were unable to get kW/out or cOp readings. It was found that there were leaks on both systems, the filter dryers hadn't been changed in ages and most of the insulation on the suction lines was missing.

The faults were corrected and the system was monitored, these units were nominal 35 tr, and the before and after output figures are shown below.

nb. Monitoring was not carried out until the units were in a serviceable condition unit before kW/out after kW/out difference%

Unit Before kW/out After kW/out Difference (%)
One 90.18 118.68 +24.01%
Two 89.43 117.05 +23.59%

PureFoods, Marikina, Manila

Ammonia compressor in the main meat processing section, generally in good condition but using vast quantities of oil.

Before the change to ERG 1000 the system showed a cOp of 2.73, after it had jumped to 3.30 - an increase in output of over 17% - plus the oil usage dropped to almost zero.
